This course consists of six engaging lessons, two questionnaires, and practical case studies designed to equip mental health advocates with the tools needed to influence policy change. Expert presenters, such as Dr. Danielle Hairston, Chacku Mathai, and Craig Obey, offer lessons that explore topics ranging from the history of system injustice to the present-day structural determinants of health and the importance of Medicaid and Medicare policy. You will learn advocacy strategies and effective communication techniques from Dr. Khadijah Booth Watkins, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, and hear acclaimed author Kelechi Ubozoh as she shares her personal lived experience story. You will gain an understanding of how cross-movement building is driving positive change across the country and learn why now is a critical window of time for mental health policy advocates.
This course is designed to encourage reflection through brief questionnaires that ask about your goals, interests, and advocacy skills. You are also invited to share feedback to help improve the course and tailor future learning experiences. Throughout the program, case studies provide real-world examples to help you apply knowledge, with a final push to complete feedback and refine your advocacy journey. Presenters also include related reading materials, which you will find in the Additional Resources section within the lessons.
